Myopia Management

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is one of the most common vision problems worldwide. About one-third of people in the United States have myopia, and in some countries, more than 90% of the population is affected.

While common, myopia is not something to ignore. Progressive myopia can increase the risk of developing serious eye conditions later in life, such as glaucoma, cataracts, or retinal detachment. That’s why early detection and myopia management are essential, especially for children and young adults whose eyes are still developing.

At Coachella Valley Optometry, we offer effective myopia control strategies to slow its progression and protect long-term vision.

Myopia management

What is Myopia?

Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

People with myopia can usually see nearby objects clearly, but distant objects, like road signs, the board at school, or leaves on a tree, often appear blurry. Children and adults with myopia may squint to see clearly or struggle with outdoor activities, sports, or classroom learning.

There is currently no cure for myopia. However, several proven treatments can help slow its progression, especially in children and young adults.

Myopia Control Options

Our doctors create personalized treatment plans based on each patient’s needs. Common options include:

  1. Orthokeratology (Ortho-K):
Ortho-K lenses are custom rigid contact lenses worn overnight. They gently reshape the cornea while you sleep, allowing clear vision during the day without glasses or contacts. Ortho-K has also been shown to slow myopia progression, making it a great choice for active children and athletes.
  2. Atropine Eye Drops:
Low-dose atropine drops reduce eye strain and help relax the eye muscles. These drops are safe for children and have been shown to significantly slow the advancement of myopia.
  3. Multifocal Glasses & Contact Lenses:
These specialty lenses reduce eye strain and redirect how light enters the eye, helping to slow myopia progression. Studies show they are effective over time compared to standard lenses.

Signs Your Child May Have Myopia

  • Sitting very close to the TV, tablet, or books
  • Trouble seeing the board at school
  • Declining grades or concentration issues
  • Headaches or eye strain after visual tasks
  • Difficulty in sports or outdoor play

If you notice these symptoms, it’s important to schedule a pediatric eye exam right away.
